BMW treibt die Automatisierung seiner Werke mit einem Pilotprojekt für humanoide Roboter voran. In der Fabrik in Leipzig testet der Autobauer menschenähnliche Roboter des Schweizer Unternehmens Hexagon, um deren Einsatz unter realen Produktionsbedingungen zu erproben. Nach Laborversuchen und ersten Tests läuft dort nun eine Pilotphase, die laut Unternehmensangaben als erste dieser Art in Europa gilt und auf einen späteren breiteren Einsatz in der Produktion abzielt.
Im Fokus steht zunächst die Batteriefertigung für Elektrofahrzeuge. In der Batteriemontage lernen die Roboter den Umgang mit Bauteilen für Hochvoltspeicher, also den Antriebsbatterien von Elektroautos. Beschäftigte bringen den Systemen die erforderlichen Bewegungsabläufe Schritt für Schritt bei. "Das Schöne ist, wenn wir es einem Roboter beigebracht haben, können es alle", sagte Michael Ströbel, Leiter Prozessmanagement und Digitalisierung in der Produktion. Anders als bei Menschen müsse eine neue Tätigkeit nicht jedem einzelnen Roboter separat vermittelt werden.
Parallel dazu erprobt BMW die Technologie in der Qualitätskontrolle und der Komponentenfertigung. Dort übernehmen die humanoiden Roboter Aufgaben, die bislang von Beschäftigten erledigt wurden, etwa das Scannen von Fahrzeugkarosserien auf Abweichungen und mögliche Fehler. Das Ziel ist, monotone, ergonomisch belastende oder sicherheitskritische Tätigkeiten zu automatisieren und die Beschäftigten zu entlasten, ohne sie zu ersetzen.
Werkleiterin Petra Peterhänsel betonte, der Einsatz der neuen Technik werde nicht zu einem Abbau von Arbeitsplätzen führen. Mitarbeitende müssten sich demnach keine Sorgen machen, dass humanoide Roboter Stellen ersetzen; sie sollen stattdessen andere Aufgaben im Werk übernehmen. BMW testet die Technologie in Leipzig bereits seit Ende vergangenen Jahres. Die laufende Pilotphase unter Produktionsbedingungen soll bis Ende des Jahres abgeschlossen werden, anschließend will der Konzern die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse schrittweise auf weitere Anwendungen und Standorte übertragen.
