Die ohnehin angeschlagene deutsche Chemieindustrie sieht sich durch den Krieg im Iran mit zusätzlichen Belastungen konfrontiert und zieht die Reißleine beim Ausblick. Der Verband der Chemischen Industrie (VCI) hat seine Prognose für das laufende Jahr beziehungsweise für 2026 zurückgenommen. Zuletzt war der Verband noch von einer stagnierenden Produktion in der chemisch-pharmazeutischen Industrie und einem Rückgang der reinen Chemieproduktion um rund ein Prozent ausgegangen, was bei sinkenden Preisen ein Umsatzminus von etwa zwei Prozent bedeutet hätte. Angesichts wachsender Unsicherheiten sei eine verlässliche Vorausschau nicht mehr möglich, hieß es in Frankfurt.
Auslöser der neuen Nervosität ist die Blockade der Straße von Hormus, einer der wichtigsten Seerouten für den globalen Rohstoff- und Energiehandel. Der Konflikt im Iran beeinträchtigt nach Einschätzung des VCI längst nicht nur Öl- und Gaslieferungen. Verbandschef Wolfgang Große Entrup warnt vor „ernsten, zunehmenden Versorgungsengpässen“ bei zentralen Vorprodukten wie Ammoniak, Phosphat, Helium und Schwefel. Bereits jetzt gebe es erste Hinweise auf Störungen in internationalen Lieferketten, die sich bei einer längeren Dauer des Kriegs deutlich verstärken könnten.
Besonders exponiert ist die Düngemittel- und Grundstoffchemie. Rund 20 Prozent des weltweiten Ammoniakhandels passieren die Straße von Hormus, beim Schwefel laufen nach VCI-Angaben etwa 50 Prozent des Seehandels durch die Meerenge. Schwefel und Schwefelsäure gelten als Schlüsselkomponenten für Düngemittel und zahlreiche chemische Produkte. Hinzu kommt Helium: Etwa 40 Prozent des weltweiten Angebots stammen aus Katar. Die Chipindustrie, die Elektronikbranche, die Halbleiterfertigung und Luft- und Raumfahrtunternehmen äußern laut Große Entrup bereits erhebliche Sorgen über die Versorgungssicherheit.
Der Konflikt im Nahen Osten trifft eine Branche, die schon zuvor unter strukturellem Gegenwind litt. Hohe Energiepreise, Überkapazitäten auf den Weltmärkten und eine schwache Industriekonjunktur in Europa haben die deutsche Chemie in den vergangenen Jahren belastet. Nach Verbandsangaben wurden in Europa innerhalb von vier Jahren rund zehn Prozent der chemischen Produktionskapazitäten stillgelegt. Viele Unternehmen reagierten mit harten Sparprogrammen, beim Branchenprimus BASF etwa sollen zwischen Ende 2023 und Ende 2025 rund 4.800 Stellen wegfallen. 2025 verzeichnete die Chemie- und Pharmabranche mit 478.000 Beschäftigten einen Umsatzrückgang um 1,4 Prozent auf 219,6 Milliarden Euro und kämpfte mit Nachfrageschwäche sowie preisgünstiger Konkurrenz aus China.
Die Kombination aus geopolitischen Risiken, volatilen Rohstoffpreisen und schwacher Nachfrage setzt die strategische Planung der Unternehmen zunehmend außer Kraft. „Strategische Planung ist immer weniger möglich. Stattdessen fahren die Unternehmen auf Sicht“, sagt Große Entrup. Je länger der Iran-Krieg andauere, desto stärker drohten sich die Effekte auf Preise, Versorgungssicherheit und Investitionsentscheidungen zu verstärken. Für viele Betriebe sei die Grenze der Belastbarkeit in Sicht, warnt der VCI – eine rasche Trendwende für die deutsche Chemie ist vorerst nicht in Sicht.
